Province approves demolition of Inglewood’s historic sandstone brewery buildings

The decision is six years in the making – Matco Developments first applied to tear down those buildings in 2009 – but it has received stern criticism from heritage advocates, one of whom characterized the province’s decision to allow some of Calgary’s last sandstone buildings to be demolished as “nationally embarrassing.”

Some of the buildings are unstable and can’t be salvaged, developers say, though they plan to retain some of them in the long-anticipated mixed-use retail redevelopment on the site. The brewery has sat mostly empty since Molson shut down operations in 1994.
