With the airport tunnel now open, city councillors want to use federal funds to extend Airport Trail to the northeast ring road as early as 2016.
The six-lane tunnel beneath Canada’s largest runway opened in May, but the road ends at the two-lane 36th Street N.E. shortly after the tunnel’s eastern exit.
As part of the agreement with the Calgary Airport Authority, the city agreed it wouldn’t complete Airport Trail to the larger Metis Trail or beyond until it developed and helped fund two interchanges that would ease access to the air terminal.
