New suburbs’ property taxes don’t cover services until 11th year, council told

New suburban neighbourhoods don’t produce enough yearly property tax to pay for the bus routes, snow clearing and other public services they receive until they’re 11 years old, city officials told council Monday.

City planners and finance officials used a pre-budget briefing with council to reveal the data — a flawed piece, one councillor argued — in city hall’s ongoing bid to limit the number of new communities being built all at once.
